It’s finally Friday! It’s been a long week with long days in the classroom with long and sometimes dry lectures. Fortunately, our instructors do a pretty good job of keeping things entertaining, but sometimes dry material is just dry material.
We’ve visited the labs a few times just to see what they’re like, but it’ll be another two weeks before we get started in them full time. These next two weeks cannot go by fast enough-after that we will be done with the academics part in the classroom. Until then, it’s a lot of studying out of the textbooks and reviewing for exams. Speaking of which, my first exam is Monday, so my whole weekend will be spent studying, reading, and reviewing. Only 10% of my grade is calculated from the classroom portion, however, the rest comes in the last three days of class during your performance evaluations on the scenarios in lab (which is why I’m excited to get into lab!).
In class our instructors have been giving us a head start/preview of what the labs will be like, just in terms of basic phraseology and taxi routes throughout the airport. Most of this is review information for me, the only new information is learning “the Academy way” of doing things. Some of the differences, compared to what I learned at school, I actually really like. Overall, I’m not too worried about things working out in lab, but I definitely understand the importance of studying hard while I’m here in academics.
On a personal note, I really like the hotel I’m staying in. The AC unit is a bit noisy (which always has to be running since it’s been 100+ each day), and the dishwasher (which I only use as a drying rack) has a broken shelf in it, but besides that, it’s pretty nice. I have a small kitchen to make food/prepare meals (which is awesome because I’ve been bringing my lunch every day so far) as well as a decent sized bathroom and desk space for hanging out in my room area. A lot of my class is staying at the group houses way north of here, which is about a 35-40 minute commute into the airport where campus is – mine is only around 10 minutes – which is awesome :).
This weekend aside from studying I will need to do laundry, run errands to the store to get groceries for the week and finish getting things sorted out in my room (I still have some clothes packed up). I also am having a craving for pizza… so I’m going to be researching some good pizza places to eat around here.
If anything exciting happens over the weekend, I’ll post, otherwise look for an update after the weekend! Enjoy everyone!
